Reg. No. 004-121NPO

Fundraising No: 06600998000

Despite an approaching cold front and muttered warnings of snow, the 2017 Hills 1000 Paws Walk for SPCA on Sunday 16 July was a great success. Hundreds of dogs (538 in total) and their owners (838 adults and LOTS of kids) arrived to enjoy the fun day, with its doggy-related activities and the 2km and 4km walks around the grounds of Hilton College where the event is held.

Although the final amount of money raised by the event has yet to be confirmed, the organisers would like to thank the many people who worked so hard to make this event a success, raising significant amounts for the three participating branches of the SPCA, in Mooi River, Howick and Pietermaritzburg.

A special thank you to the main sponsors, Hills and N3TC, and all the donors who contributed high quality prizes that encouraged so much support for the 1000 Paws raffle: the Oyster Box in Umhlanga Rocks, Fairmont Zimbali Resort on the North Coast, Cheetah Ridge Lodge at Nambiti Game Reserve near Ladysmith, Fordoun Hotel & Spa in Nottingham Road, and Hartford House near Mooi River. The raffle winners were:

  • 1st prize: Chris Koekemoer from Pietermaritzburg who won the trip to the Oyster Box and Fairmont Zimbali Resort
  • 2nd prize: Kyle Mostert, who won the trip to Cheetah Ridge Lodge
  • 3rd prize: Lisa Katz, who won the Fordoun-Hartford House prize

Thanks also to the many helpers on the day, who worked hard setting up, clearing up afterwards and especially those selling food and refreshments to the many visitors. The ladies at the SPCA tea tent served up delicious treats while the Rotary chefs had both humans and dogs salivating over the smell of their sizzling wors, bacon and eggs rolls, and steaks. The Xerox stall was busy producing high quality pictures of pets and their owners shot then and there, and popular MC Frank Knowles kept all entertained with his music and witty chatter.

The many schools across the Midlands who have been collecting money for 1000 Paws also need a big thank you. The winning classes per school have been treated to a pizza party. Well done to you all!

A final sincere thank you to Hilton College for the use of the school’s magnificent grounds and facilities that go towards making 1000 Paws an increasingly popular event. The first 1000 Paws was held in October 2009, and last year over 1000 people and nearly 800 dogs came along to enjoy themselves. The 1000 Paws concept was started in Australia where it is called the Million Paws Walk and is a national fundraiser held on the same day all across the country.

Funds raised at our Midlands Hill 1000 Paws Walk for SPCA 2017 will be shared between the SPCA branches in Mooi River, Howick and Pietermaritzburg, to assist animals of all shapes and sizes across the region. See you at the 1000 Paws Walk 2018 – date to be confirmed soon!
