1000 Paws 2019 – what a great day!

Gloriously warm weather and an exciting lineup of events contributed to this year’s Hills 1000 Paws Walk for SPCA being a resounding success. Figures indicate that there was over 1 200 people and around 740 dogs (significantly up from the 533 dogs last year). Highlights included the rousing sounds of the Pietermaritzburg Caledonian Pipe Band and the natural horsemanship display by Zecks Samu and his horse Viceroy. It was a delight to see the dogs and their owners having fun on the agility course, with pint-sized Boston Terriers sailing over obstacles like thoroughbred showjumpers. Lots of fun was had by the kids and canines of the Bruntville Dog Project, who took great pride in showing off their pooches’ skills. The winners of the bumper 2019 Hills 1000 Paws raffle were drawn, with these lucky folk heading off on luxury getaways. The top 4 prizes went to:

1. Di Krull of Merrivale – MSC Cruise.

2. Petro Meyer of Amber Valley, Howick – Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse stay

3. Mark Lederle of Pietermaritzburg – Cathedral Peak Hotel stay.

4. Angie Arbuthnot, Nottingham Road – Thula Thula game drive

A sincere thank you to everyone who supported this event, from those who attended on the day, to those who donated prizes, bought raffle tickets, collected individual sponsorships, donated their time and energy to the many hours of planning and setting up, the media who gave us lots of coverage, and the wonderful crew from Studio 73 Media Productions for their top quality photographs and the stunning video, all done free of charge as a community service. A special thank you to the schools which took part in the 1000 Paws collection tin campaign. Money raised is shared between the three participating SPCA branches that cover the Midlands area: Mooi River & District, Umngeni-Howick and Pietermaritzburg SPCAs, and with such a bumper event, we anticipate receiving more than in previous years.

The date for the 12th 1000 Paws event next year is 12 July 2020, so make a note!
